SUPERWOMAN:
An Art Exhibition

1 exhibition. 6 women artists.

On 6th September 2023, Sound of Art held a reception to launch SUPERWOMAN, an art exhibition featuring works by six of our emerging women artists at Pan Pacific Singapore.

It was an evening of excitement, amazement and inspiration as more than 20 original works by our artists dazzled the audience.

Four of the six artists based in Singapore – Wendy Tsang, Jillian Cheong, Glacy Soh, and Swasti Wonowidjojo – graced the event and shared deep and personal stories about their challenges, inspiration and stories behind their art.

Co-founder and Art Curator, Galven Lee, talking about Jillian Cheong’s Artwork Chasing Pigeons during his opening speech.

What runs through your mind when you paint? What’s your inspiration?

My black and white painting, titled RUN, represents running towards your dream, as I believe everyone has a dream. In the same way, every step that we take will make an impact to the world… it will affect everybody. This painting was a challenge to myself to minimise the things that I do. Compared to my other paintings that consist of multiple strokes, this painting only has 1 large stroke, and it’s not colourful.

The main stroke brings out a powerful impact despite its minimalism. It also shows my raw and unfiltered expression and emotion through the journey of self-discovery. I’ll leave the rest of the interpretation up to the audience’s imagination as everybody sees [things] differently, and it is about their own self-reflection.

Redefining Success

JILLIAN CHEONG used to be a junior college teacher and switched to a full-time artist in 2020.

You did a career switch from a teacher to a career artist. What’s your greatest challenge or concern?

The greatest challenge for me is to redefine success. When I started out as a professional artist in 2020, I wanted the flexibility to be more present for my children. I had grand plans: XX paintings done by this time, a solo exhibition…

However, one month later, the whole family contracted COVID — I even contracted long COVID. During that time, I was unable to do all the things I had to do, like getting the kids to school, as well as the things I wanted to do, like painting. I did not realise till then that I had tied my sense of worth to how much I could do.

When I was at this low point in life, it was my faith in God and my family who helped me. I re-evaluated life and learned that my value is not in what I do but in who I am. Success was no longer “a day of productivity”, but whether I noticed the moments and celebrated them. That’s what my art is about: finding these moments and capturing them so that others can celebrate too.

Tell us more about your series that’s titled Piscator’s Catch?

Piscator means ‘fisherman’, and the reason it’s called Piscator’s Catch is because the fishermen are in the act of catching the audience’s eye — to catch your attention, pause; and to look at my works.

I am also the oldest in this group of artists. However, I wanted to introduce augmented reality (AR) into my artworks to explore a new way of experiencing art, and took up a course in AR using my Skillsfuture credits.

To activate the AR effect on the paintings, scan the QR code on the painting descriptions with your phone and align your phone camera to the painting. Then, watch the paintings come to life before your eyes, complete with visuals and sound effects!

Inherited Passion

SWASTI WONOWIDJOJO is a versatile artist who is known for her bold, expressive paintings. She currently has three statement works displayed at SUPERWOMAN, two of which measure up to 1.8m tall. Her mother’s painting, Bouquet of Wishes, is showcased alongside her artworks.

Your exhibited series Well-watered Garden was inspired by your own mother’s work. How did your mother inspire you in your craft?

Since young, my mum and I would spend time together do crafts, ranging from making teddy bears, to pottery and painting. However, I liked painting with her as that’s when I spend the longest time with her. My childhood home was filled with lots of flower paintings as that was my mum’s favourite subject. Painting these flowers not only remind me of my childhood home, but also the time spent with my mum.

SUPERWOMAN pays homage to our women artists from Sound of Art, as they showcase their unique voices and expressions of their identities through art. Often juggling multiple roles, with their varied life experiences and backgrounds, these artists weave stories and causes they care about into each stroke of their paintbrushes.

From bold, expressive strokes that blend Western with Eastern techniques, to scenic imageries depicting freedom and playfulness, SUPERWOMAN is a collection of artworks that elicits a spectrum of emotions and provokes thought on what it means to be SUPERWOMAN.

SUPERWOMAN is currently exhibiting at Pan Pacific Singapore (Level 2, The Public Art Space) till 30th November 2023. For more information, visit www.soundof.art/superwoman.
