Old City Hall is a national monument that became part of Singapore's National Gallery in 2005. Since then, it has undergone major renovation works and was reopened to the public in 2015. This building has witnessed many pivotal events in the nation’s history, such as the public acceptance of Japan's surrender to the Allied Forces in September 1945 and the pronouncement of Singapore's national flag and anthem in December 1959. Such historical significance is worth remembering.

Gardens By The Bay and Marina Bay Sands (MBS) are part of Singapore's famed cityscape, depicting the city as a futuristic and cosmopolitan haven. What is less well known is that the Marina Bay precinct was only recently built on reclaimed land from the sea, and it was opened to the public just 13 years ago. It was a challenge for the artist to complete this sketch as her dog was ill then. However, while painting the Gardens, she was reminded of a passage from the bible, which says that even trees are capable of rejoicing! It was in this moment that she found joy amidst her anxiety, and it carried her through until the sketch was completed.

You will see this building on the way up to Fort Canning from Dhoby Ghaut. Usually, similar church buildings are white, but this one has red bricks mixed with white. The artist sketched this based on two old sepia postcards of this building dated 1910.

Suggested by an acquaintance, the artist sketched the old Singapore River. Bum boats carrying cargo were a normal sight by the river then. Elgin Bridge was the first permanent bridge built over the Singapore River. Nothing fancy but a silent witness to changing landscape along this river.

The artist found a childhood photo of herself in front of this interesting structure that she is unable to locate in Singapore’s current landscape. After some enquiries, she found out it was the iconic Singapore National Theatre. The Fort Canning MRT exit and carpark currently occupies the land. This theatre was built partly through public donations. More than $800,000 of the $2.2 million spent on the structure were public donations, represented by the red bricks. It is also this reason that it had another name, People’s Theatre. Apparently it was a good site to catch the National Day fireworks at the top of Fort Canning then. In 1984 it was closed due to its structural integrity. In 1986 it was demolished to make way for the construction of The Central Expressway.

The Central Fire Station along Hill Street is an iconic building familiar to generations of Singaporeans. Back in the 1920s, its hose tower was also Singapore’s highest point. Despite being over a hundred years old, it is still functioning to this day. The artist has personally witnessed fire engines charging out of the red gates! Inside the station, there is also a heritage gallery telling stories of how firefighting has evolved in Singapore over the decades. In 1989, the Singapore Fire Service was integrated into the Singapore Civil Defence Force, marking a new chapter in the long history of firefighting in Singapore which began in 1869.
