After going through hours of beating, torture and a brutal scourging, Jesus was made to bear the patibulum (the heavy crossbeam of the cross) and carry it to Golgotha. So weakened was Jesus’ physical condition, that the Romans compelled a man, Simon of Cyrene, to bear the cross after Jesus. Among the crowd of onlookers were some of Jesus followers who mourned and lamented for Him. But Jesus’ concern, in spite of His suffering, was for His people, as He said to the women who wept for Him, “Weep not for Me, but for yourselves, and your children.” “For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?”
