The chief priests and elders had plotted to destroy Jesus for some time. But they didn’t want to do it during the Passover feast and risk provoking the crowd who followed Jesus. They finally saw an opportunity when Judas, one of Jesus’ disciples, agreed to betray Him to them for thirty pieces of silver. Judas had given the chief priests and elders a prearranged signal: He would identify Jesus to them by greeting Jesus with a kiss. Jesus, knowing that all these happened so that Scripture might be fulfilled, remains stoic and determined to fulfil His destiny.
