Sunlight and Shadow
BYAMBAJARGAL
24 × 30cm
Oil on Canvas
2022
Using painterly strokes and impasto techniques, the artist captures the passage of light and clouds over rocky outcrops in Mongolia’s renowned Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, as seen in the video here: https://saltandlight.sg/?videos=moving-mountains-how-god-used-art-to-raise-a-young-mongolian-up-from-the-valley.
Painted at the top of Gorkhi-Terelj Pass in an alpine meadow above swaying pines, this piece is an introspection from Psalm 90: the artist’s brief existence, contrasted with the ancient mountains and the even longer eternity of their Creator, is like the wildflowers and grass that sunlight passes over, falling swiftly into shadow —- even paintings often outlive their makers! What, then, gives meaning to this fleeting corporality? The answer in the Psalmist’s prayer illuminates the ages: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom ... and establish the work of our hands; yes, establish the work of our hands.”
