During the time of Jesus’ birth, Caesar Augustus ordered a census (for taxation purposes), thus requiring Joseph to go back to his own town to be registered. Since Joseph was a descendant of King David, that meant he had to travel to Bethlehem, which was also known as the town of David. This was, of course, a difficult journey for both Joseph and Mary, who was heavily pregnant at the time.
