It was customary for the Roman authority to release a prisoner during the Passover feast. Pontius Pilate, who was governor, had intended to release Jesus. But the crowd, incited by the chief priests, insisted that Jesus be crucified, and that Barabbas, a rebel and a murderer, be released instead. And so a guilty man went free while an innocent man went to the cross instead. But unbeknownst to everyone, this was the will of God, that His Son might die as the Substitute for the sins of mankind.
